What to expect in therapy

Many people feel vulnerable starting therapy, and even feel nervous around what to expect. Below I have broken down a general idea of what therapy looks like with me. I find myself to be more on the structured side of therapy with some general guidelines of how sessions go. Some people thrive on an agenda format to sessions, while others have a natural groove in session.  We can adjust based on your needs, and I am happy to embrace a style that makes you feel most comfortable.

What to Expect 

Session One

Our first session will be an assessment session. This will entail time spent gathering information and understanding the client background, current concerns and desires for therapy. 

Session Two-Three

When you return we will discuss any additional areas from the assessment that remain and also transition to a deeper focus on the direction of therapy. Establishing goals, and cadence of sessions will occur. 

Established Care 

Around session four you can expect to feel that care is established and you have a good expectation of where we are doing in therapy (not that things never change) but overall, we have goals and topics that will come up in sessions and you will get support around them. This can go on for as long as needed. 

Reduced sessions

As goals are met, and a client is noticing improved functioning, we can reduce sessions to alternating weeks, or monthly.  

Graduation 

When goals are met, and a client feels ready to complete therapy, we celebrate graduation. 

Maintenance sessions 

I have several clients that wish to return during life stressors, or as symptoms return or increase.  This can be a return to regular sessions, or a monthly check in.
