New duty stations bring several stressors and often times leave us feeling depleted when we arrive. Then once the boxes are unpacked and we have put away all the household goods, it sinks in. This is home. That moment is when I encourage military families to lean into that saying "bloom where you are planted." For me, this is getting out and exploring nature. Not only is this a great way to see the area, it is a huge boost for mental health. Sharing this with children and partners also fosters a deep connection and sends a message of "we are going to be alright". Below are my favorite spots to explore in the local and surrounding areas of Monterey, CA.
Point Lobos: This is a great trail park with several trails within it. Parking is 10 dollars, or you can always park alongside the highway for free. Come early or go in late afternoon to avoid the crowds. Kid friendly, although some trails are exposed to cliffs. Start with bird island!
Carmel Valley: Carmel is a beautiful place to connect with nature, and potientally get some better weather than Monterey. I recommend Earthbound farmstand, Folktale winery and there are several trails with varied levels of intensity. I also recommend the Refuge Spa. Carmel by the Sea is also a great place for a date night, or beach walk.
Big Sur (Pfeiffer State Park): This park is located near the start of Big Sur heading away from Monterey. I enjoy this space due to the beauty of nature and also the kid friendly aspect. There are multiple hikes in this park, and a visitors center with food and restrooms. Many also share that camping here is a great place! It gets colder at times, so wear layers.
Garrapata Hike: There are several hikes that are in the area of Garrapata of varied difficulty. My two favorites that are kid friendly and less than an hour include the Bluff trail, and the calla lilly valley.
Capitola: When you are ready to expand your explorations, heading north is also a great place to start! I enjoy the smaller surf town feel of Capitola. New Brighton state beach offers a great beach area to walk and explore and when heading in town the cliffs are a great place to walk. Getting ice cream, lunch or coffee as you walk around is a wonderful way to see the area.
Santa Cruz: North of Capitola you will find Santa Cruz! The business increases in this area but it still has some great places to explore. Wilder Ridge Park has great hikes to offer, and within the local area there are some great paths above the cliffs to walk or drive.
Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park: One of my favorite places for young children in this area is Henry Cowell. It is a place that children can explore in a safe, but independent way. The redwood grove loop trail is a great start. Adults are sure to also enjoy this state park.
Now get out there and try something new, and remember, you've got this!
